June’s Athletic Bookworm Pick: “Natural Born Heroes” by Christopher McDougall

by | Jun 8, 2018 | Mindset

Most people I know in endurance sport have read Born to Run. But have you checked out author Christopher McDougall’s second book, “Natural Born Heroes: Mastering the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance“? Parkour, Greek mythology… What’s not to love?

The description: “After running an ultramarathon through the Copper Canyons of Mexico, Christopher McDougall finds his next great adventure on the razor-sharp mountains of Crete, where a band of Resistance fighters in World War II plotted the daring abduction of a German general from the heart of the Nazi occupation. How did a penniless artist, a young shepherd, and a playboy poet believe they could carry out such a remarkable feat of strength and endurance, smuggling the general past thousands of Nazi pursuers, with little more than their own wits and courage to guide them?”

I’ve already gotten started on this book (sorry for the late posting!) and I can safely say if you dug reading Born to Run, you’ll love this one! For Consummate Athlete Podcast listeners, you’ll even sort of notice our ethos sprinkled in there throughout—McDougall’s thesis is really that heroes are ready for anything, anytime, which is essentially the same thing that we preach in the podcast in terms of being ready to tackle any athletic challenge at any time. (A little less melodramatic, perhaps, but still a similar idea.)

I’m really loving it so far, and I’m glad I had this one queued up as sort of a bit of “summer reading” since it’s a little lighter and less heavy than the last few books we’ve read on here. There’s inspiration and of course, it’s non-fiction, but it’s really an exciting, fun read so far.
