Welcome to the first in a series of what’s going to be a series of regular articles that highlight super cool girls doing amazing things in sport over at Shred-Girls.com, home of The Shred Girls Series! While I love the fictional Lindsay, Ali and Jen of The Shred Girls, I think it’s really important and fun for young girls to see that real girls, not just fictional ones, are out there riding and shredding.
So, of course, I wanted to get Soren Meeuwisse on the site! We spent the last week together with the Trek Canada MTB team, and she and I had a blast played around at the Cycling Centre in Bromont, QC. We got a ton of rad photos, and I think she’s a great example of someone who found cycling at a young age and really fostered and developed a serious love of it. And, I admit, I’m a little jealous that she’s been able to practice her technical skills from such a young age—that’s priceless in terms of athlete development, and I really do think that if we get more young girls on bikes, we’ll grow an even more insanely strong women’s field a decade from now.
She explains, “The skills of MTB aren’t going to magically appear your first day… it takes years of small progression. But each small step will feel empowering: the first time you ride over a root, then a rock, over a log, around a berm… then before you know it you’ll be flying off a jump! The magical secret is to just have fun along the way.”

Personal favorite quote: “Remember: you got to this new level just by doing you, so you don’t have to be extraordinary. Just be your excellent self.”
