Athletic Bookworms: ROAR by Stacy Sims and Selene Yeager

by | Jan 4, 2018 | Mindset, Women Specific

Hey everyone! I’ve decided that for 2018, the way we’re going to roll the Athletic Bookworms is going to be book-of-the-month style. I’ll do two posts: one announcing the book and posing a few questions, and that’s where we’ll collect comments throughout the month. Then, at the end of each month, I’ll roundup the comments, add my own review, and post a few of the key teachings/standout points made in the books. Sound good? Great. Let’s go!

For January, we’re going to read ROAR by Stacy Sims and Selene Yeager. (Selene is one of my favorite humans, and a fellow writer at Bicycling; and Stacy has been one of the best people to interview about anything nutrition and women’s health related over my years in journalism—she’s even featured in Fuel Your Ride!)

ROAR: How to Match Your Food and Fitness to Your Female Physiology for Optimum Performance, Great Health, and a Strong, Lean Body for Life” was written with women’s health and optimal performance as the goal, both from fitness and nutrition standpoints, and what I’ve loved about Stacy over the years is her tireless fight to get good, solid research done on female athletes.

Some questions to think about as you dive in, and discuss in the comments below:

  • Have you ever considered female-specific factors (i.e your cycle) while training?
  • Have you ever planned a race around your cycle, or vice versa?
  • What did ROAR make you think about more critically? Will you change anything in your training?
