We had Ian Brisbin of VeloLaw.ca back on the podcast this week to talk about your rights as a cyclist, and together, we created this free printable that you should download, print, and put in your saddlebag/keep on your phone in case of an on-bike emergency. This information and quick set of reminders can be so helpful in a situation where you’re a bit in shock, a bit confused, and there’s a lot happening all at once… which tends to be the case if you’re in an accident or incident with a car.
The important reminders to consider if something happens:
- Are you OK? Make sure you’re not hurt before doing anything else. DO NOT DOWNPLAY ANY INJURY! If it hurts, make a note of it.
- Call 911 to report the incident.
- Turn on Voice Memo app on phone and begin recording.
- Begin to document (video/photo)
- Your body / helmet
- Your bike
- The car + license place
- Any cars / witnesses around
- Collect witness statements + contact information (including from driver).
