Super-Easy Funky DIY Bookends

by | Sep 1, 2017 | Training

For years, I’ve been seeing Pinterest-y craft projects that involved spray-painting animal/dinosaur figurines, and I always thought they looked super cool. I also figured that in real life, they would not come out as actually cool. But, over last weekend, I went on a bit of a DIY-spree at our new condo and on that list was making bookends. So, I decided it was time to try out the whole animal-spray-paint thing. And I loved how it turned out! This is a super, super simple project and takes about 10 minutes in total time to get it done, so if you’re looking for a fast-and-easy bookend solution, this is an excellent one. (I’m going to use similar tactics for a couple of other projects along these lines, so stay tuned for those as well.)

I’ve always been a huge fan of making what I can — though not to a ridiculous excess — and now that we actually own a place that we’re living in (though admittedly barely occupying for the coming months), it’s been super satisfying to tackle any home project, from big to small.

You’ll Need:

  • Brick
  • Spray Paint
  • Glue/Caulk (I used caulk because it’s a bit less runny, dries quickly and neatly, works well with cement, and it’s always good to have on hand!)
  • Tiny animals/action figures (I got mine at Dollarama)
  • Newspaper

Total cost: ~ $10 (4 bricks were around 50 cents each, spray paint is $2, caulk was $4, animals were $2—but obviously it depends on what kind of paint and plastic figurines you end up with)

The directions are pretty straight-forward:

    1. Rinse and dry bricks (they’re pretty dusty)
    2. Glue your animals to the top of the bricks
    3. Spraypaint
    4. Re-apply because you probably missed a nook or cranny on the brick and the animal
    5. Let it dry for longer than you think
    6. Arrange books to look super fancy

Let me know in the comments if this kind of thing is interesting for you guys. More—and more complicated DIYs—are coming soon!
