I had such a fun airport chat with the new cyclocross National Champ Clara Honsinger that I had to share it over on Bicycling magazine. Clara is the first woman in 15 years to beat Katie Compton in Nationals, and with that huge victory comes a lot of emotions. We talked through the race, her background, and what it took to win a race like Nats. She’s an awesome character, and everyone who loves cyclocross like I do should give this a read, since Honsinger is a name you’ll be hearing A LOT.
Why you’ll love her: “It’s super important to remain humble about racing, to respect everyone who’s out there with you, riders, mechanics, sponsors, fans. Bike racing isn’t solving world hunger, it’s a privilege that we get to race our bikes and I try to carry that with me. I love it and I’m going to use the privilege, but I know how special it is that I’m able to do it. And fundamentally, I have so much respect for Katie Compton. What would American cyclocross be without her? I’m sure it would still be vibrant in some way, but she paved the way for so many of us.”
